one poem by michael o’brien

and the spooning
never went away

i pretended
i was sleeping
i pretended
i was fitting
i pretended
i was dying

but the spooning
never went away

one christmas
she slipped
a finger
up my

my joy
she pulled my
he-man pyjamas
down further

i said:
‘go deeper sis’
and she went
all the way
to her knuckle
